Colorado Springs Automotive: Be Prepared This Winter!

Posted December 14, 2012

We know they’re coming. Those strings of days where it’s so cold it feels like your lungs are going to freeze over when you step outside to start the car. There’s nothing we can do about the weather when these days come—however, there are ways to improve your vehicle to give yourself the best chance on those cold days.

As an automotive repair shop in the Colorado Springs area, we know exactly how these mornings can go. Here’s a list of recommendations from us to make those mornings a bit easier:

Winter Wiper Blades

In a harsh winter climate, regular wiper blades won’t do the trick when it comes to keeping your windshield clear. Any automotive shop in Colorado Springs would recommend getting a good pair of winter blades for the season. A decent pair won’t break the bank and will ensure you can see clearly this winter. Plan on spending $15-$20 for a new set of blades.

Gas Line Anti-Freeze

For less than ten bucks, you can ensure your car will start in even the coldest temperatures. The reason? A bottle of gas-line antifreeze. This fuel additive treats gas and diesel engines and works by absorbing the condensation that forms in your gas tank on cold days. It’s easy to check the weather report to anticipate when those rough days are going to be!

Emergency Kit

For an easy, inexpensive way to prepare for anything, we recommend putting together a small emergency kit. Nothing too fancy—something you can keep in the back seat of your car. A good kit with candles, a survival blanket, flashlight and a first aid kit will hardly take up any space and will sure come in handy should an unfortunate situation happen.

Engine Block Heater

These might cost around $40, but will be a lifesaver if you don’t have the ability to park your vehicle in a climate-controlled garage every night. This device works by pre-warming your vehicle by hooking the engine up to an electrical outlet. The result is a quick, snappy start even in the coldest weather.
